The audacious engineers followed the thundering waters of the Reichenbach Falls when they were laying the tracks for the goods railway in 1899. Eyeball to eyeball with the raging stream and the mighty 110-metre-high Reichenbach Falls, this heritage railway, with its 24-seater wooden carriage climbs ever upwards. Near the summit station, three viewing terraces offer a breathtaking view of the waterfall and the Haslital. This excursion is pretty much a must for Sherlock Holmes fans. It was here that the famous detective challenged his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty to a fight – their hand-to-hand battle ended with them tumbling into the depths of precisely this waterfall!
We recommend visiting the Reichenbach Falls from the beginning of May to the beginning of October, as the Reichenbach Falls carries little or no water in the winter months. Limited visitor parking is available on the premises of the Meiringen private clinic at the base station of the Reichenbachfall-Bahn. Further parking spaces are located at the Alpbach car park.
